Some of these have never been on public display before. There is a large Tutankhamun exhibition and the museum makes use of modern technology, including virtual reality. After our guided tour we head over to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization to visit the fascinating Royal Mummies' Hall, where the mummies of ancient Egyptian kings and queens are on now display. Some of these mummies are so well preserved that they still have thick locks of hair and visible fingernails! Then we return to our hotel where there's time to relax. Then, we'll board the overnight train to Luxor this evening. Overnight stay on the train.

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Susanna hotel Luxor or Similar

Day 4: Luxor

. After breakfast, visits start with the famous valley of the king to explore the colorfully decorated tombs of famous pharaohs. Many important pharaohs were buried here including Ramses II and of course, Tutankhamun. Continue to the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut - the second female pharaoh. The final stop of the morning is at the Colossi of Memnon. These two giant statues of King Amenhotep III are all that remains of what was once the largest temple in the world. After time to relax by the hotel pool our busy day of sightseeing continues this afternoon as we discover the spectacular Karnak Temple. This vast complex took over 1,500 years to complete and more than 30 pharaohs contributed to it.

After a guided tour of the temple, we continue our journey, arriving in Aswan this evening.

In danger of being completely submerged by the rising water of Lake Nasser, in 1972 UNESCO stepped in and an 8-year rescue effort was undertaken to relocate the entire temple 20m higher on nearby Agilika Island.

Frequently asked questions

Citizens of countries in North America are required to obtain a visa prior to entry. Typically a renewable 30-day visa will be issued. Obtaining a visa upon arrival at Cairo International Airport is also possible. A valid passport is mandatory. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date you expect to leave Egypt.

If you hold a residence permit in the country you live in you can apply to the Egyptian Embassy/Consulate General in that country, otherwise, you have to apply to the country that issued your passport.

Though many nationalities are exempt from requiring a visa for the many Sinai resorts, a full tourist visa is required if you come to any place in Egypt that lies to the west of the Red Sea/Suez Canal.

Yes, as soon as you leave Egypt your visa will be stamped, so you will require another one. If you are from a country that can get their visa upon arrival in Egypt, you can get the new one when you re-enter the country, but if you require a pre-entry visa you should apply for 2 of these, using the second one when you re-enter Egypt.

The best time to visit Egypt is during the winter, from October to April. The temperatures are mild and pleasant, although evenings can become quite cool. December through January are the peak tourist months so expect large crowds if traveling at this time. The best time to enjoy the beaches, without having to endure the large crowds of summer tourists, would be from March to May. Temperatures at this time are warm and tourist sites are not too crowded.
